Temple of Fun: Sunday Service
Sunday Service at Church: Temple of Fun consists of a homemade seasoned ‘beef’ wellington in layers of puff pastry with dijon mustard, savoy cabbage and mushroom duxelles. Served alongside the Wellington is squash puree, creamy mash, buttered cabbage, seasoned carrots & parsnip. As well as roasted rosemary and garlic skin-on potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding, a stuffing ball and Temple of Fun’s famous Hendersons Relish gravy. Now tell me after reading that, you are not hungry. They also offer a smaller version of the roast as well as a spiced carrot & spinach Wellington if homemade beef isn’t your thing. While you’re there feel free to order an extra bowl of roasted potatoes, another Yorkshire pudding or even get a side of Church’s creamy cauliflower ‘cheese’ with seasoned breadcrumbs. This meal was an absolute treat and was the perfect way to end off a Sunday.
Housed in the listed Osborn Works in Sheffield's Kelham Island. Church Temple of Fun is a venture from Bring Me The Horizon frontman Oliver Sykes. Osborn Works was designed by famed Victorian architect William John Hale, who was responsible for some of the city’s iconic churches, so it's only fitting that on the eve of the building's 100th anniversary in 2018, it was reborn as Church Temple of Fun. The venue decor is both unique and homely. South American religious imagery covers the walls from top to bottom and a huge stained glass window floods the dining room with light. The building even includes PlayStation gaming pods, arcade machines, a photo booth and a pool table if you want something to do after your meal (if you’re not stuffed that is). Church also accommodates a 220-capacity live music venue which has featured bands such as Deaf Havana, Static Dress and Oliver Sykes’ own Bring Me the Horizon.
On this visit we both went for the homemade ‘beef’ Wellington and my goodness it was incredible. Normally when looking for a menu with a vegan Sunday roast we have to settle for a mushroom or vegetable Wellington, which while great in their own rights, makes you miss having a meat. I did not miss meat with my roast when eating this! Similarly, you come to terms with not being able to have ‘buttery’ greens, honey-roasted parsnips or most importantly a Yorkshire pudding but all of that was here for us. It’s hard to pick a ‘star of the show’ because every element of this roast was so good. With that said the roasted rosemary and garlic skin-on potatoes were absolutely outstanding. To me, the roasties make the roast dinner and these brought the meal to a whole new level. I also have to give an honorary mention to the Hendersons Relish gravy. Hendersons Relish has been a staple of Sheffield since 1885 and I was over the moon when I read the menu and saw it was incorporated in some way. This whole meal alone should be the reason why you visit Church Temple of Fun but if you can’t make it on a Sunday I still recommend going and trying one of their burgers, hotdogs or any of the specials on offer, we visited back in 2022 and the food was as amazing then as it was now.
